Every draft is a striptease of my mental state

2–3 minutes

Writing a draft isn’t just putting words on a page — it’s a slow, messy, and unapologetically personal striptease. And each layer? Weirder than the last. Let’s walk through it, shall we?

Layer One: The Polite Tease

Ah, the first layer. The one I let you see first. Clean sentences, careful commas, emotionally vague enough to pass as ‘collected.’ This is me winking from across the room, saying, “Look at me, I’m totally fine.”

Spoiler alert: I am not. But this draft? It’s polite, it’s charming, and it keeps its secrets well. It’s like showing up in a little black dress and nothing else. It keeps you intrigued, but you haven’t seen the real me yet.

Layer Two: Things Start Getting Spicy

Here’s where the draft starts to flirt back. The semi-colons argue, the metaphors get dangerous, and suddenly I’m confessing thoughts I swore I’d never admit aloud.

This is the part where I tease you just enough to make you lean closer. The sentences sway, the paragraphs smirk, and somewhere between the lines, my inner chaos looks you up and down.

You can feel it, can’t you? The draft is no longer polite… it’s interested.

Layer Three: Petty and Playful

By the third layer, the draft has fully checked its own reflection in the mirror and whispered, “I’m actually god.” It drags clichés, mocks abandoned plotlines, and throws subtle shade at editors who suggest a ‘simpler approach.’

This is the pettiness that’s actually fun. The kind of pettiness that makes you smirk in public because you recognize the genius. The draft is mine, but it’s also teasing everyone who thought they could tame it.

Layer Four: The Full Reveal

And then… the grand finale. The fourth layer. Here, everything comes off. Every insecurity, every obsession, every thought I promised would stay buried. It’s all naked on the page. No pretense. No apologies. Just a mess, glittering in all its intoxicating glory.

It’s intimate, it’s terrifying, and yes… it’s a little seductive.

Post-*** Clarity

After the striptease, there’s silence. You, dear reader, are left trying to process the mess, and me? I’m left nursing a cocktail of self-satisfaction, minor panic, and the thrill of being unashamedly myself on paper.

And the best part? I’ll do it all again tomorrow.
