If governments can classify mileage, office supplies, software subscriptions, printer ink, shipping materials, and suspiciously expensive ergonomic chairs as legitimate business expenses, then surely there must be room somewhere for the psychic collapse that comes with trying to independently publish a book in the modern economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’re telling me I can deduct the packaging tape but not the emotional crisis that arrived with it? Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because, honestly, indie publishing is more than a business model; it is a highly specific emotional endurance sport disguised as creative freedom. It is entrepreneurship wearing a cardigan and muttering to itself. It is deciding to become CEO, intern, warehouse employee, marketing department, customer service representative, accountant, designer, strategist, and emotionally unstable visionary all at once. And somehow, we are expected to smile through it like this is empowering. It is<\/em> empowering. But it is also absurd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The glamorous costs no one mentions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

“Just self-publish” usually means: pay for editing or learn to edit so intensely that you dream of grammatical errors, pay for cover design or become spiritually attached to Canva, pay for formatting or spend six hours arguing with the margins, learn metadata, keywords, categories, trim sizes, ISBN logistics, platform rules, shipping math, tax considerations, and why every website suddenly needs monthly fees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traditional industries have entire departments for these tasks. Us indie authors often have one person.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

Capitalism loves a passionate person<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The market adores creative people because we’re easy to manipulate. Tell us we can build something meaningful, own our rights, control our future, and create direct relationships with our clients, all the while juggling eighteen unpaid jobs. Because yes, ownership matters, independence matters, so does creative control. But capitalism has a charming little habit of taking beautiful desires and attaching recurring invoices to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Want to share your art? Perfect, please subscribe monthly. Want visibility? Wonderful, please pay to promote. Want better quality? Amazing, upgrade your tools. Want readers to find you? Excellent, learn twelve ever-changing algorithms by noon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dream remains yours, but the infrastructure belongs to someone else.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

And yet… we keep doing it<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Most of us independent creators are not doing this because it’s easy; we’re doing this because we want our stories heard, we want ownership, we want to build something that belongs<\/em> to us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I find this desire to be powerful. Beyond the spreadsheets. Beyond the rejection. It survives because creation often outlasts discouragement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, money matters. Let’s not become fake-mystical about it. But not every return is immediate, and not every profit is numeric. Sometimes the gain is skill. Sometimes it is confidence. Sometimes it is learning how industries work. Sometimes it is meeting readers who genuinely care. Sometimes it is proving to yourself that you can finish what you started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we can’t write off heartbreak, panic, or the unique despair caused by exporting the wrong PDF version three minutes before launch. But we can<\/em> recognize that our frustration is not a random failure, and it’s one we share with a number of industries. It is often the cost of learning to build something real in a system that rarely makes room for tenderness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
