The walls remember a version of you that you’ve been actively trying to forget, and they’re waiting to see if you’ll slip back into it.

And sometimes, you do.

I tell myself I go back for the writing. For the details. For the texture of memory that only exists in the original setting. You can’t recreate a specific kind of silence, or the way a streetlight flickers like it’s thinking, or how someone used to look at you across a table you no longer sit at. Those things live there. And they don’t travel well.

So I go back.

To the café where I once said something I can’t unsay. To the street that still smells like a version of me that didn’t know better yet. To the people who knew me. I catalog these emotions like they’re useful. And they are… that’s the problem.

Accidental inspiration

There’s a lie I like to tell myself: that none of this is intentional. That I just happen to be in these places. That running into old people is a coincidence. That revisiting old dynamics is just… life. But there’s something a little too convenient about it.

We love to pretend we’re victims of inspiration. Like stories ambush us. Like we had no choice but to feel everything again, no choice but to reopen doors we very deliberately closed.

But what if that’s not true? What if part of me is orchestrating it? What if I want the discomfort because I know it produces something honest?

There’s a part of me that knows exactly which emotional wounds are still sensitive enough to bleed on command. And sometimes, I think she’s the one planning the route. Choosing the café. Sending the message. Saying yes when she should say no. All in the name of “material.”

Observing and participating

It starts subtly. You go back just to look. To remember. To gather. But then someone says your name the way they used to, and suddenly you’re not observing anymore. You’re inside it again. You respond the way you used to. You laugh at the same things. You shrink, or you soften, or you sharpen — whatever that version of you did to survive that space.

That’s the dangerous part. Not the place, not the people; it’s how easily you can become someone you already worked so hard to outgrow.

The ethics of it all

Is this okay?

Is it okay to revisit people who don’t know they’re being turned into fragments of a story? Is it okay to sit across from someone and think, this will sound incredible in chapter six? Is it okay to let something hurt you again just because you know you’ll describe it well?

I romanticize suffering like it’s a resource. Renewable. Like you can keep returning to the same emotional well and pulling something new out of it. But there’s a cost. I feel the shift. The moment where living stops being living and starts being documentation.

There’s a specific kind of disorientation that comes from this. You’re in a place that shaped you, feeling things you thought you processed, thinking in sentences instead of reactions. Half of you is experiencing it, the other half is already narrating it. And somewhere in between, you get lost. Just enough to wonder: Am I here because I need closure… or because I need a paragraph?

It’s uncomfortable to admit that those two things can start to blur. That sometimes, you delay your own growth just to keep a certain kind of emotional access open.

Because once you truly move on, you lose the accuracy of the feeling.

The city might wonder too

The strange thing is, none of these places change because of you. The café is still loud. The streetlight still flickers. The people still exist in their own timelines, untouched by the fact that they’ve been written into yours.

The city doesn’t know it’s in your book.

It doesn’t know it held you at your worst and your most observant at the same time. It doesn’t know you walked its streets not just to remember, but to harvest. Maybe writing is a quiet kind of theft. Not even intentional, at first. I don’t think it’s fully conscious. But I also don’t think it’s fully innocent.

There’s something in me that knows exactly where the good sentences live. And they rarely live in safe places. So I go back. I tell myself it’s for closure. For nostalgia. For curiosity. But if I’m being honest…

I think part of me is still willing to get a little lost if it means finding something worth writing down.

— Montse

Reflections on revisiting familiar places and people, exploring the tension between seeking inspiration and confronting emotional wounds for the sake of writing.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[26622126,782781751,410272838,782781804
7223,7758714,178,1747,8053601,3330,349
post-2270","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-creative-pulse","category-pen-punch","category-the-curator","category-unexpected-muses","tag-author","tag-bookish-thoughts","tag-books","tag-fiction","tag-indie-author","tag-publishing","tag-writing
Critiques of the notion of writing solely for market trends, advocating for authenticity and originality in literature, which ultimately fosters deeper connections with readers.
Writing should prioritize personal artistic expression over marketability, emphasizing that true passion resonates with readers and defies commercial trends.
Indie authors often face assumptions that their primary goal is attention, yet true fulfillment stems from writing for passion, not recognition.
https://mbnovels.com/en/2025/07/20/publishing-a-book-is-like-posting-a-nudes-folder-with-better-grammar/
Publishing a book is an intimate act of vulnerability, exposing personal truths and emotions.
