They&#8217;ve read the back cover. They&#8217;ve maybe stalked your author photo a little (no judgement). Now they&#8217;re hovering over page one, fingers on the edge, ready to flip or flee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">This is your moment. Your one chance to reach across the table, look them dead in the eye, and ask them to stay the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Your first line isn&#8217;t just a sentence. It&#8217;s a\u00a0come-hither.\u00a0A hand extended. A zipper pulled down just enough to show a flash of something irresistible. In short,\u00a0your first line should awaken the reader&#8217;s imagination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The slow unbutton<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">A great opening doesn&#8217;t give everything away. That&#8217;s not seduction; that&#8217;s just flashing. The goal is to\u00a0reveal, to\u00a0tease.\u00a0To show just enough skin that the reader\u00a0<em>needs<\/em>\u00a0to see more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Consider the difference:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">&#8220;It was a dark and stormy night, and Mary was very scared.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">&#8220;Later, Mary would blame the storm, but they both knew the dark was already inside.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">They both say the same thing, but the second line doesn&#8217;t explain; it invites. It creates a space the reader desperately wants to step into. That&#8217;s the art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Different strokes for different readers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Of course, not every reader wants the same kind of undressing. Know your audience. Know your genre. Know what kind of flirt you are. These are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">&#8220;They say I was born with a caul, and that the caul was sold to a sailor for a safe voyage home.&#8221; \u2014 <em>Jane Eyre<\/em> energy. Mysterious. Folkloric. A promise of destiny and doom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">&#8220;The building was on fire, and it wasn&#8217;t my fault.&#8221; \u2014 Jim Butcher, <em>Dresden Files<\/em>. Immediate. Playful. Establishes voice, stakes, and the chaos to come.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">&#8220;All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.&#8221; \u2014\u00a0Tolstoy, <em>Anna Karenina.<\/em>\u00a0Bold. Universal. Intimate. It doesn&#8217;t describe a specific family; it describes\u00a0<em>yours.<\/em>\u00a0Your unhappiness. Your particular ache.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get naked<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">How does one craft the first line to leave imaginations breathless?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Start in the middle.\u00a0Not the beginning. The\u00a0<em>middle.<\/em>\u00a0Something has already happened. Tension already exists. We&#8217;re catching up.\u00a0<em>&#8220;When I finally killed him, it was Tuesday.&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0Tuesday! So casual! So much to unpack!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Make a promise you can keep.\u00a0Your first line is a contract. If it promises wit, deliver wit. If it promises dread, deliver dread. Nothing ruins the mood like a tease that can&#8217;t follow through. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Leave something covered.\u00a0The best first lines reveal just enough to make the reader desperate for what&#8217;s hidden. A flash of ankle. A shoulder glimpsed through a doorway. Not the whole truth, just the\u00a0<em>shape<\/em>\u00a0of it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Establish who&#8217;s in charge.\u00a0A great opening line has authority. It doesn&#8217;t ask politely for attention. It\u00a0demands\u00a0it. It walks into the room like it owns the place.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The aftercare<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">A successful first line leaves the reader slightly breathless. Slightly off-balance. Slightly more willing to follow you anywhere \u2014 through slow chapters, through confusing twists, through the dark forest of the middle act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\">Now you just have to make sure the rest of the book is worth getting dressed for.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained
